What is Racking?  

When designed and maintained properly, storage racking systems allow for easier inventory access, better utilization of floor space, and a streamlined workflow. From standard shelving units for small components to large-scale pallet racks for heavy materials, these storage solutions are essential in maintaining efficiency and order in your warehouse.  

Why Rack Repairs are Essential  

Storage racks endure a tremendous workload each day. Forklift bumps, improper stacking, overloading, and normal wear can be all but inevitable. However, when left unchecked, even minor issues can escalate into dangerous situations.  

Damaged racks compromise the entire structure. A weakened or improperly loaded pallet rack system can create unstable loads, even potentially leading to collapse – putting employees at risk of severe injury or worse. Unmitigated rack damage can also result in inventory losses worth thousands (if not millions) of dollars.  

The Rack Manufactures Institute (RMI) offers the following summarized guidance for facility owners: “Both American National Standards ANSI MH16-1 (Industrial Pallet Rack) and ANSI MH16.3 (Cantilever Rack) include requirements that owners maintain the integrity of their rack systems; implementing a periodic inspection program is the best way for owners to demonstrate that the integrity of their rack systems is being maintained.” 

Both standards include maintenance requirements stating that owners maintain the structural integrity of their rack systems by confirming the following: 

• Overloading does not occur at any load position or on the system as a whole. 

• Periodic damage inspections are conducted. If damage is found, the damaged portion is isolated, its load is removed, and repairs are conducted. 

• Loads are properly maintained. For pallet rack systems, ensure that pallets are not damaged and are in good operating condition. For cantilever rack systems, ensure that all loads on the arms and bases are properly placed and stable under normal operations. 

• Proper loading techniques are followed. For pallet rack systems, ensure that loads are properly loaded, stacked, or stable. For cantilever rack systems, ensure that product is placed on load arms as close to the columns as possible. 

• Do not double stack loads unless the system is designed for such loading configurations. 

• Avoid altering the system(s) without consulting with a qualified engineer as alterations could affect load ratings. 

When to Replace or Inspect Racks  

Even with regular maintenance, storage racks need repair or replacement when clear signs of damage are identified. Knowing the warning signs is critical to preventing risks.

• Visible Damage – Dents, bends, misaligned beams, or missing hardware are clear indicators.  

• Rust and Corrosion – Environmental factors can weaken the integrity of your racks over time.  

• Overloading – Racks exceeding their weight limits may deflect (outside allowable limits), buckle, or fail entirely.  

• Collisions – Incidents with forklifts or other equipment often cause hidden or visible damage that requires immediate evaluation.  

• Everyday Wear and Tear – Bolts, connectors, and beams loosen over time, causing instability.
