A Look Inside an Automated Factory

Automation is revolutionizing the way industries operate, making processes smarter, faster, and more efficient. At Adaptec, we collaborate with customers to assess how automation fits into their facility and seamlessly integrate it into their operations, keeping them competitive in today’s fast-paced market.

Adaptec’s Chief Technology Officer, Bryan Doherty identifies two primary factors that drive businesses to automate their operations: cost control and a changing workforce.

Cost Controls

Automation tools, like advanced track and trace systems, enable manufacturers to trace issues back to their source—whether it’s a raw material mistake or a specific production error. This is particularly vital in industries like food manufacturing, where recalls can damage both finances and reputation.

Automation also incorporates real-time quality inspection processes, reducing scrap rates and cutting down on wasted resources. Machine vision and AI-powered tools catch defects immediately, preventing defective products from advancing further in the production process. Less scrap equals lower costs and less wasted time, creating a more sustainable manufacturing model.

Automated factories use advanced systems to manage inventory more accurately. Machine learning algorithms can predict demand, understand stock levels, and ensure that manufacturers order only what’s needed. Automating this process reduces costs associated with excess inventory, storage, and spoilage.

A Changing Workforce

The workforce is shifting as older employees retire and younger generations show less interest in manual labor. Traditionally, workers performed repetitive tasks at individual stations. Now, automation is redefining roles, emphasizing process oversight—managing line setups, runtime adjustments, and production reporting instead of manual labor.

This evolution is creating a new type of worker, one who combines manual skills with technical knowledge. To keep up, businesses are investing in training programs to ensure employees can operate, maintain, and optimize automated systems safely.
